Georgiev, Todorov & Co. Law Offices congratulate the intern Vili Datzov for his excellent performance in the second competition, organized by student science academy “Rebus”, which took place in May 2019. The competition is conducted under the guidance of Professor Plamen Panayotov and in partnership with the law department of “Sofia University st. Kliment Ohridski”; student council in relation to Sofia University; Centre for development of public relations; youth organization PI, Izmir and the Centre for Multicultural Dialogue, Kumanovo.
The tasks in the competition were related to the transposition of acts of secondary law of the European Union into the Bulgarian legal order. The acts of the EU, which were testing the participants’ abilities, were EU Directive 2012/13 on the right to information in criminal proceedings; EU Directive 2016/1919 on the right to legal aid for suspects and accused people in the framework of criminal proceedings and people requested for surrendering in the framework of the European arrest warrant and EU Directive 2016/343 on the strengthening of certain aspects of the presumption of innocence and the right of individuals to take legal actions in criminal proceedings.
Four teams comprised of law students participated in the competition, which was split in two rounds (direct elimination and final). In the first part of each round, the teams had the task of drafting a bill, accompanied by motives, and in the second – to defend it in a simulation of a legislative debate. The competition took place in the spirit of respect, teamwork and competition, and the teams demonstrated a great level of knowledge of the subject, as well as good legal technique in preparing their draft laws.
After equally good and extremely contеsted debates, the team which won was the one mentored by assistant professor doctor Simeon Groisman, and conisiting of Valentin Kunchev, Vili Datzov, Gergana Urumova, Damyan Atanasov, Zia Choban, Krum Dinev, Lyudmila Kostova and Silviya Naumova.
The jury also announced individual winners in the following categories:
- Best speaker: Vili Datzov
- Most attractive participant in the debate: Damyan Dimov and Panayot Yotov
- Future European legislator: Lyudmila Kostova and Zia Choban
- Best legal language: Nikolay Nedyalkov
- Even by himself, the warrior is still a warrior: Darina Hristova and Peter Baev
- Prize for the most scrupolous opponent: Georgi Bozhinov and Denis Assenov
- The most striking participant: Elena Kralev and Iliya Lassin.
The aim of the competition is to strengthen the practical skills of law students across the EU in the fields of rule-making and harmonization of Bulgarian legal order with EU law.
